I spend the next couple weeks sidetracked, while some of the others are called on a mission not requiring my help. I did find out the blue stone whatever had been here on earth for a few million years though. Then I was asked to check something in another town, and when I got back, the stone had been destroyed, somehow.

Unfortunately, we didn't have time to mess around, because then we were all called in to check the breaking news. China had invaded Taiwan. And the USA was now at war with them.

Not that we specifically are; we've got bigger concerns. Less than a year to go before an alien invasion, humanity doesn't have time for a major war to sap our resources fighting each other. On the other hand, we can't really let either side weaken the other, either.

But wait - there's more! China, it seems, have a new section of military: the Powered. That's right, China appears to have dealt better socially with Powered people than our hemisphere has.

Not having much other choice for now, Horus offers a portion of our time and services to the USA, in whatever ways we can help. Horus gives each of us some upgraded communication equipment so we're always in constant contact with each other.

Horus, it turns out, can now reach out and touch technology all over the entire earth now, and well into orbit. Alia has some effective area-affecting abilities as well.

Me, I go to a base near San Fransisco and start helping the recruits learn how to deal with front line Powered...i.e., don't let them get close. Or see you. Hit them with the biggest, baddest stuff you've got, or else don't attract their attention. They don't seem to be getting the message.

After a week, things start happening. Ten-foot balls of firey metal wreckage begins falling from the sky all over the pacific coast. Finding onethat appears to be headed directly for the base I'm at, I snag a steel girder, bend it in half, and play baseball. I smash it, and a fair portion just shreds off into dust. The rest heads back into orbit, where Horus lets me know a chinese space station just took a nasty hit. When I batted that wreckage, the military types started to take me seriously.

It's about time.

Every so often, I hear about what the others are up to, and through them, a few other events. Max (the electric menace Max. Not the high-speed runner Max.) has been given a deal with the government, to cause havoc in China for early release, and possible relocation to another country below the equator. Horus is causing the Chinese power grid to drop. All over China, excepting certain hospitals where he's decreed it okay. Alia is in Japan (which has also now been invaded) and she has, with permission from their government, to cause Mt. Fuji to erupt. No, not like Krakatoa or Vesuvius, just smoke and ash in the air, so the Chinese airforce has to spend considerable effort flying around. She later does this a few times around China, trying to close them out for a little while. At least, until some weather-manipulating Powered started clearing the air.

Me, I get word that U.S. naval ships and subs are being sunk off the coast of L.A. I catch a flight down, and get in the water out there. I eventually find on my sonar a group of sharks swimming in remarkably straight lines. I follow along behind them (quite a ways behind. I don't swim very fast...) for quite some time. Eventually, they come upon another ship. They stop, and most of them swim away. Another one (not quite as shark-shaped) stays behind, tearing holes in the ship. I swim up carefully, and they never see me coming. I've got an arm around him and have given the thing a noogie before he noticed me.

It screams something that makes an echo in my senses, and puffs out some spines. It stings a little, but not too bad. I get it in a headlock, and start throttling, trying to take him in alive if possible.

Then those other sharks come back. From their size, they're probably great whites. They clamp on to me. One is latched on to each leg, another has my left elbow, and the fourth has chomped my head. They're latched on like giant versions of those piranha a few months ago, and it hurts about as much; which is to say, not at all.

After about a minute of being a chew-toy, I finally feel the guy go limp in my grasp. The sharks suddenly let go and swim away. I start to sigh from relief that I won't have to tear up sharks with one hand, when I giant tentacle wraps around me, and pulls me down.

Yep. This is going to be one of those days.

Down, down, down I go, the fish-fiend dragged along with me. I see the biggest squid I've ever seen since the last time I watched 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.

It squeezes me. Hard. I notice my veins and arteries have begun to glow dimly, and since this thing is so much stronger than me, I will myself stronger. And then I burst free from its grip, and grab the tentacle with my free arm. Just in time for another tentacle to wrap around me. I get pulled in, and I can see a huge beak...closing on me.

That hurt rather badly. I'm now glowing like a strong light bulb. I will my defenses to strengthen, along with my healing. Then I kick it right in the beak.

It squeezes and bites me again, I kick it a couple more times. Another bite in response.

I can't take much more of this. One more bite, and I won't be seeing air again. I kick it one more time with my last bit of strength...which turns out to be just enough.

After a minute (my healing being now complete, now that nothing is actively trying to tear me to bite-sized pieces), I swim towards shore, carrying the giant squid (which I made sure was dead) and the unconscious fishman. I leave the squid on the beach for some sushi restaurant to find. As I start breathing air again, I realize something. All the biting, spines, and beak biting and tearing at me has left me intact, but my clothes shredded.

I'm naked in L.A...again.

And the fishman is gasping for breath. Sigh. I run into town and find a pool. He starts choking on the chlorinated fresh water. The owner of the house comes out, and wants to know why a small naked man is doing with a fish monster in his pool. I tell him it's a prisoner of war, and ask directions to the nearest public aqarium.

I manage to get there with fishface still 'breathing,' and find a janitorial closet for some coveralls. And a phone to let Horus know what's happened (since my communication stuff got bit by the shark that had clamped onto my head.)

I get back to the fish...who has disappeared. No one saw it leave. I run back to the beach, no sign of him above or under water. I hitch a ride back to SF, after a day or so looking for who knows what.

I spend some time talking to people on the base, letting them know what happened, and what to look for if things like that start happening again, only to find out Horus already let both coasts know.

Now what?
