(Another game? Is this guy nuts?)

Been playing yet another online game, this time RPG World Online. (Nothing to do with the comic of similar name.)
Appearently, this one's been going for a few years now, still in beta, and even more like UO than that other one i recently wrote about. The downside is the limited number of users at a time, which was once 30, I've seen over 60, and I'm not sure about the cap anymore. Graphically, it's even older than Terraworld, but the gameplay is a lot better. And it's also free, yes, although several perks are left to subscribers. They're even called perks in-game, and they include such things as skills over rank 400, use of certain armor, weapons and spells. Still, it should be enough to keep a person busy for quite a long time. There are somewhat fewer jerks than I expected, although there's still a few people who like to PK even when you're not supposed to be able to.
To get around the no-non-consenting-PKing thing they built into the game, people who can use a certain magic (which I'm not yet sure, but I suspect blue, which animates things) to create a golem of whatever type they can and set it aggro-loose on unsuspecting peoples. This is sometimes done for fighting practice, or just practice making golems, but some people like to see the newbs run when a wizard who should know better creates a giant copper golem in the mining caves and has it kill people trying to learn how to work iron (or silver, or gold, etc.)
The magic system is interesting, too. You need certain runes to cast spells, in a certain order. If you find a usable combination of runes you have, you can make a new spell. They only 'work' if you're the right level, and there's no list of ones that work. When you find a working combination, you can put it in your book. Runes do wear out, and then you'd need new ones. To use any weapon, you must have it's skill, otherwise you can't even equip it. And no attacking unarmed unless you have that skill.
It's altogether pretty good, and I'll likely stay with it, even though I'm probably a major cause of lag...

Date: 2004-07-13 12:07 am (UTC)I'm also looking at another game in (alpha? beta? who knows...) testing. It's called Endless Online, and it's version 0.12, and I still don't know what to make of it.
Terraworld is at least temporarily out because they lost their server, otherwise I probably would not have found either of these things.
